Recently, God has been teaching me a lot of things. He’s been teaching me about His love, His grace, & His adventurous spirit. He’s been teaching me about rest, trust, & self-worth. He’s been teaching me so many important things, but there is one thing that has been more evident recently.
Our relationship with God is not as complicated as we make it out to be. It’s really quite simple. There are many kinds of relationships, romantic, friendship, familial, acquaintance, & so on.
Out of those relationship types, I’ve been learning that there’s one that perfectly describes the kind of relationship God desires with us. And that is friendship. I guess, you could say there’s a familial aspect when talking about Him being our Father, but otherwise, I have seen that all God really desires is a friendship with each of us.
God created this world and us with a friendship in mind. Throughout all of history we see that God’s constant pursuit is the pursuit of friendship. He seeks to know each of us & us know him in return.
And if you think about it, He really is the ultimate friend. Take a second and bring to mind some of your own friends from school, work, or church. You have them in mind? Okay. Notice one thing they all have in common across the board. They’re flawed. They make mistakes, they start drama, they leave, they expect more, there are so many things they fall short in when it comes to friendship. We’re all flawed. We’re human.
And that’s where the beauty of a friendship with God is recognized. See, God is the one being in the entire universe who has not a single flaw. Just imagine being best friends with someone who won’t turn their back on you, won’t spread rumors, won’t subject you to pressure, won’t expect more of you. That sounds pretty great to me.
Essentially, He is the ultimate friend.
One of my favorite things about a friendship with God, is how much He loves to talk and listen. You know those friends who talk way too much or just not enough? God exhibits a perfect balance of the two. He’s a great talker, always speaking about something or another. And He’s a great listener for when our words escape the floodgates. He’ll sit there and just listen for hours, if need be.
God also isn’t in the business of abandonment. He sticks around through the good & the bad. He may be quieter at times, but that doesn’t mean He’s gone. He’s still very much present in your life. It’s just a matter of whether you’re looking for Him or not.
Another thing. He sees you, all of you, and doesn’t run away scared when confronted with the messy parts of who you are. He loves you despite the many flaws you have. And He always will.
And too, He’s not looking for a specific impression. There’s nothing that He expects of you except an open heart. He doesn’t expect you to like a certain band, dress a specific way, or be completely composed 24/7. There’s no need to impress Him more, because He already loves you. Why try to create a love that is already there?
Like I said, He’s the ultimate friend. So, talk to Him. It’s not too hard. Just talk to him like your talking to a friend at school or on the phone. There’s no need for fancy words or composed phrases, just talk.
If you find that you need a friend right now, or even if you don’t, seek Him out. He’s there, He’s listening. He’s ready for a friendship with you. He’s just waiting for you to come and ask Him.
“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are.” – 1 John 3:1
“Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” – James 4:8
